Day 1: Arrive Christchurch

Haere mai! The Garden City is waiting for you just beyond customs and baggage claim. Collect your rental car from the airport depot and plot a route to your designated hotel – depending on your arrival time, there are a few things you should check off on your day of leisure. Why not speak to one of our experienced travel planners before you go, and make the most out of your time in Christchurch?
Stay: Rendezvous Hotel (incl breakfast)

Day 2: Christchurch, Tekapo, Omarama, 312km (3 hrs 40 mins)

Drive through the MacKenzie Country to Lake Tekapo, where you stop to view the tiny Church of the Good Shepherd, built of local stone and oak in 1935. You’ll be treated to tourist stops aplenty as you continue your journey to Omarama, with many quiet places to enjoy a pre-packed snack or stop for a quick photo.

Day 3: Omarama to Dunedin, 233km (2 hrs 55 mins)

Oamaru, famous for its white limestone buildings, is also home to Moeraki Beach with its mysterious, spherical, 60-million-year-old boulders. Each boulder weighs several tonnes and is up to two metres high, so get your feet wet as you stop to explore the beach. Continue south on your journey to Dunedin, the ‘Edinburgh of the South.’

Day 4: Dunedin to Te Anau, 290km (4 hrs 10 mins)

Drive through the rolling hill country of South Otago and Southland. After the farming centre of Gore, cross the Waimea Plains towards Fiordland. Visit Lake Manapouri with its rugged bush-clad mountains, before arriving at the shores of Lake Te Anau. The picturesque township of Te Anau is the main visitor base for the glacier-carved wilderness that is Fiordland National Park, and the perfect stopover on the way to Milford or Doubtful Sound.

Day 5: Free day to visit Milford or Doubtful Sound

A bucket-list worthy trip, Milford Sound is one of the world's most spectacular fiords. This 22km-long fiord is situated in a magnificent alpine landscape in the World Heritage Fiordland National Park. Want to experience this spectacular place up close? Why not book your place on one of the popular day walks? 
Looking for an alternative to the jagged peaks of Milford Sound? With its rolling hills, verdant rainforest, and twisting hidden inlets, Doubtful Sound will take your breath away. Sometimes called 'the Sound of Silence', there is a cloistered serenity within Doubtful Sound that contrasts with Milford Sound.

Day 6: Te Anauto Queenstown, 175km (2 hrs)

Spend the morning in Te Anau. You may like to take an excursion across the lake to visit the Te Anau Caves, take a walk along the side of Lake Te Anau, or catch the local movie Ata Whenua – Shadowland. This is a locally-produced, 32-minute film that explores Fiordland by helicopter and is highly recommended. After lunch in one of the local cafés, make your way to Queenstown.

Day 7: At Queenstown

Enjoy a full day to experience this magnificent stop. Surrounded by majestic mountains, Queenstown boasts adventure activities in all forms, from extreme to relaxed exploration. Here you can take a thrilling jet boat ride, experience the ultimate bungy jump, pan for gold, raft the white water rapids, take a wine trail, fish for trout, play golf, or 4WD sheer canyons.

Day 8: Wanaka to Franz Josef, 283km (4 hrs 5 mins)

Today make your way through Wanaka and up the West Coast to the glaciers – Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers are without doubt the greatest lure of this region. Nestled on the edge of the rainforest and descending 2500m over 13km, these great cascading frozen rivers are only 6km from the Tasman Sea and in this respect are unique. They are also amongst the fastest moving glaciers in the world with, Franz Josef known to move up to 5m per day on occasions.

Day 9: Franz Josef to Christchurch, 486km (6 hrs 55 mins)

Today you will travel north along the narrow, bush-clad coastal plain through Hokitika to Greymouth. Turn inland towards the Southern Alps, over Arthur’s Pass and across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch.

Day 10: Depart Christchurch
